Santiago Cabbie Stories: Blessed by a Taxi Driver

I got blessed by a taxi driver yesterday. First time that’s ever happened to me.
I’ve been cursed (ok, cursed at) by a cabbie—although in truth, I was actually just a convenient proxy for a certain former US president he seemed to have issues with. I’ve also been lectured to, lied to, sweet-talked, and ripped off; I’ve heard sob stories, tall tales, bad jokes, and tirades, but blessings? This was a first. And I think this particular cabbie is concerned for my eternal soul.

El Colectivo

Santiago has all the typical forms of transportation: buses (Trans Santiago),  a fairly extensive subway system (el Metro), taxis, inter-city trains, etc., but something I’d never seen before is the “colectivo.”

A colectivo works like a combination of taxi and bus. It’s a car–painted black with a sign on top–and a set route. People wait at designated stops and pay a set fare depending on the distance they ride. This popular system is faster and safer than a bus, and cheaper than a regular taxi, and at peak hours of the day you will see people lined up waiting their turn for their spot in the next collectivo.

En Santiago hay un medio de transporte que mezcla las virtudes del taxi y el bus. Se llaman colectivos. Son autos, de color negro, con un cartel de colores encima. Tienen una ruta específica y un precio fijo para el pasaje (que varía dependiendo de la distancia a recorrer). Andar en colectivo te permite moverte más rápido que en micro de forma más barata que en un taxi.

Para tomar un colectivo, hay que estar muy atento, puesto que paran a dejar y tomar pasajeros casi en cualquier esquina. El máximo de pasajeros es 4 (tres atras y uno adelante, junto al chofer). Y a veces hay que apretarse un poco para compartir el trayecto. Ir con tres pasajeros en el mismo auto hace el viaje mucho más íntimo!!
