This week’s Photo Challenge theme is “UP,” and here’s my take… but I’ll leave a bit of mystery:
* What is he looking at? Do you know where he is?
* Clue: he’s in Chile
Several readers guessed correctly that he is in the port of Valparaíso, on Chile’s central coast. He’s riding one of the city’s famous “ascensores,” usually translated as “elevators,” although all but one are rather funiculars. Take a look from his perspective:

Passengers enter the small wooden cars from above and below. As one car rises, the other descends.

These elevators began to appear in the late 1800s and several still operate today–not only as tourist attractions, but as an everyday means of transportation for the residents of the city’s steep hills.
I believe the ascensor pictured here is “Reina Victoria”–does anyone know for sure?
