“Cachando Chile” begins with the Chilean slang term “Cachar” which means “to understand.” The English equivalent would be “Getting Chile.”

This  site is intended for outsiders who are trying to understand Chilean culture as well as for Chileans who are trying to understand the foreigners who are trying to understand them. In other words: this is a space for exploring cultural interaction between insiders and outsiders…

This was originally a project between myself, Margaret, writing in English and formerly signing as “La Gringa,” and a cohort from Madrid, writing in Spanish and signing as “El Viejo.” El Viejo has moved on to other projects and I am now flying solo, although I will continue trying to convince him to put his 2 pesos worth in from time to time.

I have also decided that it is time to drop the “La Gringa” nickname and from now on will sign as Margaret,* which is, in fact, my real name.

Because this project aims to promote an intercultural dialogue, I will try, as often as possible, to post content in Spanish as well as in English. A translation tool is available on the upper right hand side, although granted, machine translation still leaves much to be desired,  an upcoming revision of the blog will do a much better job of providing content in both languages.

I truly hope you will respond–in either language–and tell us your reactions, comments, experiences, and stories!

*Margaret Snook (AKA “La Gringa”) is a North American anthropologist who came to Chile in 1991 for a 6 week pre-research visit and ended up staying forever. She lives with her Chilean husband in Santiago, where she writes about wine & food and edits, translates, and photographs just about anything she can get her hands on.   She is also the Gringa behind the blog Tasting Chile.

Cachando Chile tiene su origen en el término de la jerga chilena “cachar”, que significa algo así como entender, conocer.

El sitio  está pensado para extranjeros que quieren entender la cultura chilena y para chilenos que quieren entender a la gente de afuera que está interesada en conocer el país. En otras palabras: este es un espacio para indagar en la interacción cultural entre chilenos y no chilenos.

En sus incicios, se trató de un proyecto armado de a dos, conmigo, Margaret, escribiendo en inglés y firmando como “La Gringa” y un socio madrileño escribiendo en español y firmando como “El Viejo”.  “El Viejo” ya está siguiendo otros caminos  y yo me quedo aquí, volando sola, aunque dejo la puerta abierta para los muy valiosos comentarios del Viejo cuando quiera.

También he decidido que ya es tiempo de abandonar el apodo de “La Gringa” y firmar con mi nombre real, Margaret*.

Dado que este proyecto persigue el objetivo de promover un diálogo intercultural, intentaré, hasta lo posible, proporcionar los textos tanto en español como en inglés. Hay una herramienta de traducción incorporada al sitio, aunque, como todos bien sabemos, los traductores no humanos dejan mucho por desear aún. Una nueva versión de Cachando Chile que se lanzará en unos meses más tendrá más facilidades para aportar textos en ambos idiomas.
Es mi sincero deseo que aquí se produce un verdadero diálogo intercultural que incorpore a los hablantes de ambos idiomas en la conversación, incentivando la realización de comentarios también en ambos idiomas. Les invito a participar activamente con sus comentarios, experiencias e historias acerca de los temas planteados en el idioma que más les acomode.

*Margaret Snook (“La Gringa”) es antropóloga norteamericana, cronista eno-gastronomica, editora,  traductora y fanática de la fotografía. Llegó a Chile en el 1991 para una visita de investigación de 6 semanas y terminó quedándose para siempre. Vive en Santiago con su marido (chileno) y escribe sobre vino & gastronomía y además traduce, edita y fotografía–mucho.También es la responsable detrás del blog “Tasting Chile“.
